HISTORY OF VICTORIA’S DINER
Victoria’s Diner is once again a “family run” business and we are proud to have completed our first year of ownership. We have done much to improve the Diner during this first year and we were honored our efforts were recognized by our guests, and that we have been awarded “Boston’s Best Diner 2012” by Boston Magazine.
We are pleased that some of Victoria Diner’s seasoned staff has remained with us as loyal and committed hosts, wait & kitchen staff and we welcome our newer team members. We are proud to have an excellent staff in our kitchen creating new, signature dishes and sauces for Victoria’s.
Our family would like to let our guests know that we value their business. There are several beliefs that we feel are essential to living up to your expectations:
- • We believe exceptional CUSTOMER SERVICE is our MOST important job.
- • We believe in treating others as we wish to be treated and this includes our staff, our guests, our restaurant, and our community.
- • We also believe Victoria’s is THE BEST DINER in Boston.
However, we understand that there is always room for improvement. We have begun to make many improvements. We are in the process of updating our website and menus. We now offer specials every day. We continue to serve Breakfast all day/Everyday along with Lunch & Dinner!!
We have luscious desserts, milkshakes & smoothies. We offer Beer, Wine & Cordials for mixed drinks & adult coffee drinks. We have added comment cards at every table. We value your input and request that you take a minute to fill these out and drop them in the comment card box as you exit. As an incentive, we will select one per week and email the winner their prize information.
We love it if you would dine with us here at Victoria’s, and hope you do so often, but when you can’t – we offer alternatives for our guests…
If you desire, we can prepare a full dinner for you (from soup to nuts) to be brought home – for holidays, dinner parties or any other occasion. We will make your dinner party effortless so that you may spend more quality time with your family and friends and simply enjoy your event!
Scheduling an event or meeting at your site? We OFFER CATERING SERVICES, too! Our fresh food brought to your location! We will work with you on your menu decisions (whether it is on our menu or not) and assist with any other questions you may have! Victoria’s Diner opened on January 3, 1949. Victoria’s was started by George Georgenes and it was a 52 seat stainless steel “Jerry O’Mahony” diner from New Jersey. It opened in the same location as the Diner remains today, 1024 Massachusetts Avenue. Victoria’s intersected/intersects four communities Dorchester, South Boston, Roxbury and the South End.
George’s sons Nick and Charlie took over in 1956 after returning from the Korean War. In 1965 Charlie and Nick decided to replace the diner with a new one. They purchased a “Swingle” Diner, which came in two sections with a vestibule. In the 1970’s they acquired a liquor license and in 1975 they added another dining-room, which was styled after an English pub and named for their father “Café George”.
Over the past six decades clientele at Victoria’s Diner (or the “Vic”) has included some of Boston’s most influential people (State Senate President William M. Bulger, legendary Boston Pops conductor Arthur Fiedler. Ray Flynn were regulars) construction workers, employees of Newmarket Business District, police, firefighters, EMT’s contractors doing business at 1010 building and employees from the 1010 building, as well as residents from the surrounding neighborhoods, all frequented and continue to frequent the Diner. On December 31, 2004 Mayor Thomas Menino stopped in to have one last cup of coffee with the brothers before they turned the key’s over to the new owner, Jay. Jay took over January 1st and then remodeled and brought it back to a more ‘50’s’ retro look. In 2007 Jay sold the business to two business partners who remodeled Cafe George and opened the Diner for 24 hours on Thur, Fri and Saturday nights.
In September 2011 Damian, Sheree (and family) purchased Victoria’s Diner and continue to update and renovate. We launched a new Diner menu in March 2013 and now offer take-out and catering menus. We have acquired a full entertainment license and have plans to offer a brunch and jazz brunch during the weekend and are also planning for karaoke and trivia nights during the week. We believe the best is yet to come for Victoria’s and we look forward to having our family become a part of Victoria’s Diner history!!
